Alas, whenever I try to sudo change ownership or permissions on /var/www/myproject/whatever, all files remain with www-data:www-data for owner:group and 0664/0775 for permissions. I use the memcached session handler and configured the wrong host which resulted in the exact some error message. So it is not a fix.
I tested that path and stop one server, it was OK for http requests. If you are using memcached then the save_path should not have the tcp:// prefix.
