I've tried other virtual machines with the virtual hard drive still residing on the NAS shared folder and I'm getting the same results. I even changed the permissions on this folder http://1pxcare.com/failed-to/vmware-mount-failed-to-open.html That seemed to do the trick! Was also unable to mount but was specific to a version.. I can download KB975354 but it contains only fix287961.
